I made it! Two wonderful weeks in an atmosphere of creativity and a deep seriousness of the poets, artists, and writers role in the transformation of this universe. Often I am asked why I come here now for the second year. It is one of the most motivating places on earth, with a community sense that hits you the minute you step on campus.
This summer was highlighted by extraordinary Faculty and Student readings, lectures and panels. Anne Waldman, one of the co-founders of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics was at her best. She directs the school with a fine staff under the leadership of Lisa and Julie.
My first week workshop was lead by Dr. Tyrone Williams. He had us writing, some of my work is on this blog and more papers from that week of dealing with the saving of the earth will be added soon. In the second week Dr Harryette Mullen was our teacher and we created things all week. We did one task that was very helpful. We talked and wrote about three things, our image as a writer, our writing habits and the relationship of our art, writing, performance, and poetry to the community. Those sessions, whether working by yourself, with a colleague or group were wonderful.
There are many in the writing community who do not know about the Summer Writing Program at Naropa U. or do not take it too seriously because of a strange rejection of the Beat foundation of this school. They are the one's who lose. I say WAKE UP! Its wonderful and for a soon to be 72 year old poet, its a home for me and my art.Yes, I will be back next year. I think two weeks are the limit for me physically although you never know. I hope to bring Roger with me next year, do you her that Roger this is what you call in the church, THE CALL! Some of us have already talked about a bunch of us of renting a house next year!
Enjoy the Summer! Write some poetry!! Peace and love, ko shin Bob Hanson
